Canada's regulations regarding the transport of farm animals are dreadful and badly in need of revising. CFIA is apparently revising them but nothing seems to be happening, and last fall, a CFIA staff person stated that the allowable transport times will likely not be reduced. Currently, ruminants may be transported for 52 hours without food, water or rest and 36 hours for pigs, horses and chickens for 36 hours.
The Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals (CCFA), working with Humane Society International, Animal Alliance of Canada and World Society for the Protection of Animals has formed the Animal Transport Coalition to work on this issue. The CCFA has prepared a petition to the House of Commons requesting that the Canadian government take action.
If you are interested in participating in the petition, or if you want to gather names for the petition, please visit the CCFA website for more information. There is a PDF of the petition for you to print and send in.
